Advantages & Disadvantages- Wisconsin Metal Roofs

Metal roof repair
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Metal Roofs?

Some Wisconsinites think that metal roofs have some disadvantages. We can't think of what they are ;).  When we talk to customers, they give some reasons why they may lean toward a different solution other than a permanent metal roof.

Most often, we hear statements like this:

"I'm just looking to repair a leak or damage to my asphalt roof. My asphalt roof didn't last as long as the contractor said, and I need a quick repair."

For some people looking for a temporary solution to a leak or an emergency repair due to storm damage, the initial price of a metal roof may be seen as a disadvantage.  Of course, what we WANT to reply (but don't)  is that if the previous ( or sometimes current)  homeowner had chosen a metal roof as their replacement or original product in the past, they would not be facing this problem. We will do what we can to help of course. Believe us, if you come home from work and your recessed lighting is dripping water onto your carpet, you need a solution NOW. We've seen too many of those cases and we can help.

"I'm an investor, and I need to flip this house or get a tenant in here quickly. I don't want a permanent roof, just get me a cheap asphalt roof so I can move to my next project."

Hey, we get it. This is America, and savvy and skilled investors can create some neighborhood property value and earn nice profits by improving a property in poor shape. People need housing, and we are in favor of all human beings being sheltered from the elements. We don't have any qualms with someone providing that service and creating value for family when they need a home to rent.

For those looking to sell a house fast, like an investor or someone suddenly switching jobs, a metal roof may not be the best solution because a permanent metal roof project should be properly planned out. It might be easier for that person to get a cheap asphalt roof and pass the problem to the next homeowner. We just feel bad for the person at the end of the roof's life who has to pay twice the money to replace the roof again when it's cheaper to do it right the first time.

"I'm a do-it-yourself kind of guy, and I have some experience helping my buddy replace his asphalt roof. Why should I learn something new when I can go to the hardware store and buy something that looks good enough?"

Right on, man. Have fun with that project in the summer. We understand that you'll owe your buddies three weekends of work, and that's OK for some folks. So, let us ask you this: If you could get a better return on your investment by putting on a metal roof, would you want to consider that before you spend three weekends putting on another roof that you'll have to replace again in 10 years?

Wisconsin metal roofs are measured and custom produced for your home. We don’t try to pull products off the shelf and hope they are “good enough” for your situation. This careful planning and manufacturing process ensures a quality control that is unmatched for any other type of material. It does increase cost, but the permanent solution means it will never have to be done again.

"Don't try to confuse me with facts and warranties! I just want something fast and I don't really care what it looks like or how long it lasts."

For customers who are looking for a quick turnaround, a metal roof may not be the best option for a quick hit and run job. Some investors looking for a fix and flip investment may not mind putting on an inferior product to turn the property over and let the next owner worry about replacement. Sometimes a homeowner may have the best intentions to install a quality product, but a job loss or career change requiring a quick move to another location may diminish the long term value of a permanent roof.

While they might save some money on material costs, they may not realize the long term savings they were hoping for by doing it themselves. Other DIY homeowners have the skills and experience and a Wisconsin Metal Roof product will fit their skill set well, creating a lifetime solution combined with the singular pride of personal workmanship. For those who intend to stay in their homes and raise their kids with the intent to create a family legacy, there are few better decisions that provide a return on investment like a metal roof.

Advantages of Metal Roofs

Permanent roofs have the following advantages to consider when you look at your options.

  • Our metal roofs boast the industry-leading Class 4 Hail-resistant Rating. A class 4 hail resistance means our roofs are resistant to hail as large as 2.5″. That’s just a little smaller than a major league baseball!  (If the forecast calls for baseball size hail, you can’t find better shelter than a metal roof. Get under one!)
  •  A metal roof is not likely to attract lightning. Lightning is generally attracted to the highest point, and some studies show that lightning may start from the ground up as well. Considering trees are made of wood and frequently attract lightning even without any metal around. Studies prove that lightning is attracted to the highest surrounding objects, regardless of their composition. In the unlikely event lightning were to strike your home because it is the highest object in the vicinity, a metal roof will actually protect your home from combustion.
  • Metal roofs expand and contract naturally with the environment. Unlike heavy  roofing materials, a properly installed, lightweight, metal roof is designed to protect your home against expansion, contraction and ice damage.
  • Permanent metal roofs are virtually maintenance-free. Because metal roofs do not have fillers like many asphalt roofs, so they do not streak or provide favorable locations for algae growth. Occasionally, due to low slope combined with dry conditions, unsightly debris or bird droppings may accumulate on your metal roof. Normal Wisconsin rainfall amounts will carry that debris away naturally, but a homeowner may want to rinse the roof with a hose or pressure washer from time to time for aesthetic purposes.
  • Metal roofs are walk-able and as accessible to a homeowner or workman as any other roofing material. However, we recommend the proper grip of your shoes’ soles. High heels not recommended for walking on your metal roof ;).
  • Metal roofs are non-combustible: they will not burn or support the spread of fire. In case of an interior fire, a permanent metal roof can help to preserve the integrity of the roof structure long enough to help a safe escape. For fires that originate outside the home (such as wildfire, fireworks, or neighboring homes on fire), a permanent roof won’t give floating embers any fuel to burn. A metal roof is the safest product you can put on your home.
